University of Maryland - Environmental Science & Technology Department
In the Department of Environmental Science & Technology (ENST), our primary mission is to educate students on the fundamentals of environmental science, while instilling a deep fascination and intellectual capacity to work in their chosen area of specialization, whether its Natural Resources Management, Ecological Design, Soil and Watershed Science, or Ecosystem Health. ENST offers a novel and integrated set of disciplines that are strongly grounded in the ecological, natural, and physical sciences, coupled with a pervasive ethic that the health of natural systems is the basis for strong agriculture, healthy societies, and vibrant economies. When our students graduate, we want them to be top-notch environmental stewards with a broad framework from which they can advance professionally, personally and socially.
ENST is developing a world-class center of discovery and teaching that innovates and educates to address increasingly complex environmental conditions. The Department serves the campus community as a key, foundational unit with an increasingly broader emphasis on the environment. It is unique among campus units, because it has a critical mass of diverse faculty and core competencies in environmental science, technology, and problem solving. The Department serves the world, nation, and state by offering science-based expertise across a spectrum of environmental fields. Bringing together expert faculty in soil science, ecology, natural resource management, and ecosystem engineering within a single department has allowed for unique collaborations, courses, curricula, and Extension programs that have led to a better understanding of complex environmental systems and issues and provided applied and fundamental sustainable solutions.
